Switzerland is a beautiful nation with a rich Christian heritage, but it is rapidly turning away from God.

Switzerland is a mountainous country located in central Europe.  It shares borders with several countries including France, Germany, and Italy.  Its natural beauty makes it a popular tourist attraction.

More than 7 million people live in Switzerland.  The Swiss are a mixture of people with mostly German or French heritage.  Nearly a quarter of the population is foreign.

Switzerland has long been among the wealthiest countries in the world.  It has a strong industrial base and a world famous banking system.  Tourism is also a significant source of income.  Although it is not a member of the EU, the economy is still closely tied to other European nations and has suffered through the current economic slump in Europe.

Switzerland is a federal republic made up of 26 cantons that have considerable autonomy.  It has historically remained neutral in international affairs and just joined the UN in 2002 (although it has long been the host to several UN organizations).  The federal constitution guarantees freedom of religion, but each canton determines its own relationship with churches.

Over 80% of the people are listed as Christian.  They are split almost evenly between Catholics and Protestants.  However, most of the people appear to be Christian in name only.  In the last 30 years, the number of people active in Christian churches has fallen by 50%.  The number of evangelicals is approximately 4% and slowing falling, but this is still a relatively high number for European country.

Switzerland has a rich Christian heritage.  It was home to several well-known theologians such as Calvin, but today few know of or care about these things.  Peace and prosperity have led to an increasingly secular society.  Many of those leaving the church have looked other places for meaning.  The occult and eastern religions have become more popular.  Pray that these people may be reached with the gospel.

Increasing numbers of Swiss evangelicals have been actively praying for revival.  Pray with them for a moving of God in Switzerland.  Pray for Christians as they seek to share their faith.  Pray in particular for those seeking to evangelize the predominantly Catholic cantons.

The Swiss church remains strongly committed to foreign missions, and a large number of missionaries are out in the field.  Pray for these missionaries and their supporting churches.
