Montserrat Factbook

Montserrat is home to a large proportion of Christians.  The most difficult challenge is dealing with catastrophic events that have disrupted every aspect of life.

Montserrat is an island in the Caribbean.  It's most notable feature is the presence of a live volcano.  The volcano began erupting in 1995, eventually forcing the evacuation of two thirds of the population.  Today the capital city remains uninhabitable, but people are slowly returning to the island.

The current population of listed at 7500, but it is difficult to obtain accurate numbers.  Nearly all of the residents were natives to the island.

The eruptions that begin in 1995 completely disrupted the economy.  Life is difficult for those who have returned.  Great Britain has pledged a large amount of aid to rebuild Montserrat's infrastructure.

Montserrat is an overseas colony of Great Britain.  There is freedom of religion.

The gospel is well known on the island.  The Anglican Church was the largest group.  Evangelicals made up as much as one quarter of the population.  All of the numbers are now estimates due to the displacement of so many people.

Although many identify themselves as Christians, a significant number are nominal.  Pray that the Lord might use even these terrible events to bring many more to the Lord Jesus.
