Dominica Factbook
Dominica is primarily a
Roman Catholic nation, but evangelicals represent a significant and growing portion of the
island. There are many who profess
Christ but
show no evidence of Christianity. Pray
for believers as they face an increasingly immoral society.
Dominica is located in
the eastern Caribbean in the middle of the
chain that stretches
northward from the South American coast.
The island is rugged and mountainous with warm and tropical
weather.
Approximately 70,000 people live on the
island. Nearly all are of Afro-Caribbean origin.
The population has been slowly shrinking because people have been
leaving
the island.
Dominica's economy is
based primarily on agriculture and is relatively poor. Banana exports account for 20% of the
economic activity. Unlike other Caribbean countries, tourism is limited because few beaches exist in
the rugged terrain and there is no international airport. Dominica is frequently struck by
hurricanes,
causing further damage to the fragile economy.
Dominica was a French
Colony until the mid-1700's. It was
later a British colony until
gaining independence in 1978. It now
functions as a parliamentary democracy and has been relatively stable
of late. The people are granted freedom
of
religion.
The French influence brought Roman
Catholicism to the island. Today, 75% of
the people are
classified as Roman Catholic. However,
most a nominal adherents and seldom attend mass. In recent years, Evangelicals have grown in
number and now account for more than 10% of the population.
Pray for personal growth for Christians
and their churches in Dominica. Pray for opportunities to reach the many in the Catholic Church who
have no real meaningful relationship with Christ. Immorality is widespread in Dominica. Pray for a deep desire among Christians to
influence their society by living holy lives.
