Denmark Factbook

Denmark is dominated by the Lutheran church.  Unfortunately, most are Christian in name only.  Few actually have a meaningful relationship with the church or Christ as Denmark becomes increasingly secular.

Denmark is located in north-central Europe.  It is the southernmost of the Scandinavian countries.  The land reaches out into the North Sea north of Germany and south of Norway and Sweden.

The current population of Denmark is approximately 5.5 million.  The people are almost entirely native Danish speakers.  The remainder are primarily European or Arab.

Denmark has enjoyed a relatively strong economy.  It is based largely on the export of food and manufactured goods.  Although Denmark is linked with the European Community, it does not participate in the Euro currency.

Denmark is governed by a constitutional monarchy with parliamentary rule.  The government has been stable for many years.  The people are guaranteed freedom of religion although the Lutheran church is the official state church and is supported by a government imposed tax.

Approximately 80% of the population associate themselves with the Lutheran church.  Unfortunately, few maintain a meaningful relationship with the church.  Church attendance ranges from 1% to 4%.  Liberal theology is embraced by most of the clergy in the church.

There are some evangelicals both in the Lutheran church and in other groups, but their numbers have fallen over the last several decades.  They now number less than 5% of the population.  Evangelicals have struggled to stand against the liberal theology of the Lutheran churches, and it is difficult for evangelical pastors to find positions.

Pray for the people of Denmark.  The majority on the rolls of the Lutheran church have never heard a clear gospel presentation.  Pray for the encouragement of Christians as they attempt to bring the message to the people.  Pray for the people as they search for answers in an increasingly secular and materialistic society.
