Andorra Factbook
Andorra is dominated
by wealth and materialism. Nearly all
are listed as Roman Catholic
but few actually practice. The occult
influences many. In recent years, there
has been growth in the number of evangelical believers and churches.
Andorra is located on
the border between Spain and
France in the Pyrenees Mountains. It's a small territory slightly more than
twice the size of
Washington D.C.
It's a beautiful land of mountains and narrow valleys. It's comfortably cool in the summer and cold
and snowy in the winter.
Approximately 70,000 people live in Andorra. About 1/4 of them are natives of Andorra. The remainder are foreigners with the largest
group from Spain. Catalan (Spanish) is the official language.
Andorra is wealthy
through tourism. Eighty percent of the
GDP comes from tourism. Andorra also serves as a tax haven
for many.
For more than seven centuries, Andorra was a co-principality of France and Spain. In 1993, Andorra adopted its own
constitution and government. The
ties
to France and Spain
remain, but their role now is largely titular.
The constitution guarantees freedom of
religion. However, the Roman Catholic Church was the official state
church until 1993 and still dominates with 90% of the
population. Until the last 10 years, all
evangelical
believers were foreign. Now there are
three known evangelical churches and several native Andorran
believers. After years without a full
time
missionary, there are at least two in service.
The gospel has strong opposition. Being Catholic is part of the culture. Many in Andorra dabble in the occult,
consulting mediums and spiritists.
Wealth has given Andorra
a worldly, materialistic society. Pray
for those barriers to be
broken down that they might see the beauty of the Lord Jesus.
